Frequently Asked Questions & Financial Guides

How is Fixed Deposit (FD) interest calculated?

Fixed Deposit (FD) returns are calculated based on either simple interest or compound interest. For tenures below 6 months, banks typically calculate simple interest. For longer tenures, interest is compounded quarterly. The compound interest formula used is: A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt), where A is maturity amount, P is investment, r is annual rate, n is compounding frequency per year, and t is tenure in years.

What is a Loan EMI and how is it computed?

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Installment. It is a fixed payment made by a borrower to a lender at a specified date each calendar month. EMIs consist of both interest charges and principal repayment parts. The formula is: EMI = [P x R x (1+R)^N]/[(1+R)^N-1], where P is Principal loan amount, R is monthly interest rate, and N is the number of monthly installments.

When should I transfer my Home Loan balance?

A Home Loan Balance Transfer is beneficial when another bank offers a lower interest rate, reducing your monthly EMI and overall interest burden. However, you should calculate net savings by subtracting processing fees, stamp duty, and administrative charges of the new bank. Generally, a transfer is highly beneficial during the early years of the loan tenure.
